Google Gemini and AI Overviews

Gemini leans on Google surfaces you already manage, which makes it the most winnable engine.

If you only work on one engine, work on this one. Gemini and AI Overviews draw heavily on Google surfaces, which are the surfaces you already control. That makes this the rare case where AI visibility follows directly from work you have already done.

  • AI Overviews, the generated summary appearing above traditional results for some searches. Most patients encounter this without thinking of it as AI.
  • Gemini, the standalone assistant.

Both lean on Google understanding of your business, which means your Business Profile, its map data, its reviews, and its index of your website. Overviews matter more in volume, because they appear in ordinary searches rather than requiring someone to open an assistant.

Why it is the most winnable

The inputs are ones you can edit directly:

  • Your Business Profile. Categories, services with descriptions, attributes, hours, and address. Everything in chapter two feeds this.
  • Google map data, including your pin position.
  • Google reviews, both rating and content.
  • Your indexed website, particularly location and treatment pages.
  • Structured data on those pages.

Compare that with an engine drawing on opaque training data. Here the levers are visible and in your hands, which is why a practice with a complete profile and real treatment pages tends to appear in Overviews well before it appears anywhere else.

What to do specifically

  • Complete the services list with descriptions. This is the most direct way to make your modalities machine-readable, and it is the field most often left empty.
  • Set every accurate attribute, since these are structured facts that answer questions like whether you offer online care or wheelchair access.
  • Publish a real page per office and per treatment, with the facts in plain text.
  • Add LocalBusiness or MedicalClinic structured data, covered in chapter six.
  • Answer real questions plainly on your site. Whether a referral is needed, how long a session takes, whether someone must drive them home. Overviews are frequently generated for exactly these questions.
  • Seed your profile Q&A with accurate answers, as in chapter two.
  • Build genuine reviews, which supply prominence and the material for the justifying sentence.

Health topics get extra caution

Health queries are treated conservatively. Generated summaries in medical topics tend to lean on sources the system considers reliable and often add safety framing or decline to answer clinical questions altogether.

Two practical consequences. First, credibility signals matter more here than in other industries: real author attribution, clinician credentials, and clear practice identity. Chapter six covers this as E-E-A-T. Second, do not expect to appear for clinical questions about whether a treatment works. Aim at the questions you can legitimately answer, which are about access, process, logistics, and availability.

Checking your presence

  • Search treatment plus city queries and see whether an Overview appears and whether you are in it.
  • Search practical questions a patient would ask and note which sites get cited.
  • Ask Gemini directly about your practice, its address, and its services.
  • Test on mobile as well as desktop, since Overviews appear differently.
  • Record results on a fixed schedule rather than checking impulsively.

If you are absent from Overviews while competitors appear, the cause is usually an incomplete profile or a missing page for the specific treatment or office, not anything exotic. Perplexity is next, and it is the clearest window into your sources.
